Strategy

How to choose the right festival for your documentary

Most filmmakers submit to the biggest names first and wait. Sometimes that is the right call. More often, the festivals that change a film's future are the ones that fit it: the right audience, the right industry guests, and the right premiere.

Decide your premiere first
Many top festivals want a world or national premiere. Once you screen publicly, some doors close. Choose where you want to premiere before you submit anywhere else.
Build a tiered list
Pair a few reach festivals with strong fits for your subject and audience. A festival built around your story's community can do more for your film than a big name that passes on it.
Know what you want from it
Awards, press, an audience, a sales conversation or an Oscar-qualifying win. Festivals with an industry market or pitch forum are the ones to target if distribution is the goal.
Count the full cost
Submission fees are the smallest part. Travel, passes, publicity and screening materials add up. Run the numbers in the Festival Cost Calculator before you commit.

From filmmakers who changed their festival strategy

“Kerry’s wise and smart counsel helped us shape the film festival strategy for ‘Aloha Daze’. We abandoned the normal submission process after several rejections and looked at a neat strategy to promote the film to festival directors. After working with Kerry, ‘Aloha Daze’ was picked as the opening feature for the 2010 Big Island Film Festival. We won the Audience Choice award for Best Feature...”
Kim Spanoghe, Producer, Indie Kine Films (Aloha Daze)
“After being rejected from all the festivals we applied to, I felt hesitant and lost... We have completely changed our direction after talking to Kerry and submitted the film to smaller festivals around the world... We premiered at Los Angeles to a sold out audience, we got some press interest, more festival screenings, a couple of awards and distribution!”
Ester Brym, Director and Editor (Butterflies)

Kerry David's projects have earned 75+ festival awards. These are individual experiences; every film is different.

Questions

Documentary film festival FAQ

What is an Oscar-qualifying festival?

It is a festival whose top award in certain categories can make the winning film eligible for Academy Award consideration, usually in the short film categories. The Academy publishes its list of qualifying festivals and rules each year, so confirm the current rules before you plan around one.

Should I submit to the biggest festivals first?

Only if your film is a realistic fit. A premiere at a festival built for your subject or audience can lead to more screenings, press and sales conversations than waiting on a long shot. Decide your premiere strategy first, then build a tiered list.

Are any festivals free to enter?

Some are. Listings marked Free Submission do not charge an entry fee, and some festivals offer fee waivers. Check each festival's official site for current terms.

Does Documentary411 confirm submission deadlines?

No. Documentary411 lists festivals and links each official site, but does not track live submission status. Always confirm dates, fees, deadlines and eligibility on the festival's official site before you submit.

Can I suggest a festival or a correction?

Yes. Use the Suggest correction link on any listing, or submit a new festival through the resource submission form.
